Sleep is still a growing field that is full of mysteries. And, learning all I can about shut-eye is a great passion of mine that I just can’t stop! In the past, I have had sleep issues and I know how it can cause problems in other areas of life. Hopefully, I’ve helped answer your questions this week!

Q: Are we any closer to finding out WHY we sleep? I recall reading an article about how the answer is still a bit of a mystery. It had to do about a person that had a hereditary sleeping disorder that prevented her from entering one of the stages, which would often lead to death.

A: Thanks for asking. Sleep is still as much of a mystery as death is according to most of the sleep community.  We know that sleep is key to rejuvenation and health, but why and how it happens is still much of a mystery. The disorder is you are probably describing in fatal familial insomnia, and it is extremely rare. Sorry I couldn’t provide a definitive answer! Your feedback is pretty dead on.

Q: What’s the optimum amount of sleep? What’s the best way to wake up feeling refreshed?

A: It’s all based on age, and certain age groups need to sleep certain amounts. From 1-4 weeks old: 15-16 hours per day; from 1-4 months old: 14-15 hours per day;  from 4-12 months:  14-15 hours per day; from 1-3 years old: 12-14 hours per day;  from 3-6 years old: 10-12 hours per day; from 7-12 years old, 10-11 hours per day;  from 12-18 years old: 8-9.25 hours per day; Adults: 7.5-8.5 hours per day. Getting the proper amount of restful sleep and really making sure those last 2 hours of sleep you are completely uninterrupted is the best way to wake up feeling refreshed and ready to seize the day!

Q: Any relationship between sleep apnea and eczema? from Google?

A: Admittedly, I am not an eczema expert but, I  did some researching while considering my answer to this question. There does seem to be correlation between eczema and sleep disorders. There are also correlations between eczema and digestion, eczema and stress, so I worry that it could be a combination of many of these factors as much as sleep apnea, per se. Sorry I didn’t have a more specific answer!
