A look inside the most sleep-deprived careers

If you think you have a hard time sleeping, get in line. How much sleep does the average adult need each night? Seven to nine, according to the National Sleep Foundation. You might have one night here or there when you clock in less than that, but there are professions out there that consistently miss the mark. Here are the careers that are the worst offenders.

Home Health Aide

Average sleep time per night: 6 hours 57 minutes

Home health aides are responsible for helping patients through their days. Daily tasks include providing assistance with dressing, eating, giving medicine, bathing and grooming. They also help with chores around the house the patient is unable to do — such as laundry and sweeping floors.

Lawyer

Average sleep time per night: 7 hours

Upholding the law and protecting client rights is a big job. Lawyers have the ability to take their clients’ future on their shoulders, so it’s no wonder they don’t get much sleep. They spend their time advocating for and advising their clients in court.

Police Officer

Average sleep time per night: 7 hours 1 minute

Protecting and serving citizens and their communities, police officers often pull long hours to keep others safe. Whether they’re assigned to uniformed patrol, investigations or traffic duty, police officers are tasked with preventing crime and misconduct in the neighborhood.

Who else made the most sleep-deprived careers list? Physicians and paramedics sleep 7 hours and 2 minutes on average while economists, social workers, and computer programmers log one more minute per night to bring them up to 7 hours and 3 minutes.

For a career that logs the most hours on average, sales representatives and hairstylists log more than 7 hours and 15 minutes per night. But forest workers win the sleeping contest with a nightly average of 7 hours and 20 minutes. All those minutes can add up!
