Do adjustable beds help with sleep apnea?

If you or your partner have sleep apnea, that likely means one or both of you are waking up and feeling like you barely got a wink of rest. There are many treatments available for this exhausting condition, all depending on its severity, but one in particular may present the most comfortable solution for you and your partner.

Lying flat in your bed only encourages the collapsing of your airways, and that can lead to more snoring or even more difficulty breathing. When you are already struggling with sleep apnea, the last thing you need is another barrier to unrestricted breathing.

Fortunately, research on sleep apnea indicates that an adjustable bed may be a quick fix to this common problem. Simply propping yourself up with pillows is a temporary solution, but an adjustable bed ensures you will not roll off your pillow mountain and that you will enjoy ample support to maintain an open airway.

This works simply because when your head is at a higher elevation than your feet, the tongue releases from the back of the throat and the airways can relax in an open position. This elevation change is also a great way to alleviate nuisance snoring and the collapsing of airways among those who are overweight.

Sleep apnea is a potentially serious medical condition. If you or your partner are struggling with its symptoms it is important to get proper medical attention. While changing your sleeping position may help for mild forms of sleep apnea, a continuous positive airway pressure machine (CPAP) is available to help clear the airways and provide continuous airflow. While this common intervention is vital for many, it is cumbersome and some find it downright uncomfortable; that isn’t ideal for a good night’s sleep. If you find that changing your sleeping position helps clear your airways, be sure to speak with your doctor before discontinuing any of your current medical interventions.
